HoloPADDs
In the vast galaxy of Star Trek: Discovery, where technology knows no bounds, holoPADDs (holographic personal access display devices) have emerged as the pinnacle of creative expression and storytelling. These revolutionary devices have redefined the way stories are told and shared with the world.

Star Trek: Discovery
UEDF HoloPADDs
In Season 3 of Star Trek: Discovery, as the show jumped ahead to the 32nd century, our design team was tasked with developing user interfaces for a futuristic new technology: the holoPADD. Once a handheld device, one thousand years in the future holoPADDs emanate from crew members’ badges and could be controlled by simple gestures. HoloPADDs were designed for the United Earth Defence Force, as seen below. Our design team considered the key uses of a holoPADD in the Star Trek universe and used 3D space to create a functional, beautiful user interface.

Federation HoloPADDs
In Star Trek’s universe, the Federation of Planets was founded on the principles of liberty, equality, peace, justice, and progress. As Star Trek: Discovery took the iconic show into the 32nd Century, our team was called upon to design the holoPADD user interface for the Federation and Starfleet. Our holoPADD design would need to be able to visually convey major story points—showcasing technological progress front and centre. See some of our work below.
Tricorder Mode
Tricorders have been a tool used on Star Trek since the Original Series. As we jumped into the 32nd Century on Star Trek: Discovery, the tricorder received a holographic makeover. Used for scanning and advanced computing, our tricorder’s interface utilizes 3D space to reflect beautiful scans of otherworldly objects and phenomena.
Engineering Mode
Solving problems. Answering big questions. Protecting the universe. On Star Trek, Engineering usually saves the day. Engineering mode on holoPADDs provides characters with at-a-glance data, designed with thoughtful hierarchies of information reflecting key plot points.
